I often get asked why Vie Esthetic Studio or why the hummingbird so I thought I’d let you guys in on how it was all put together!

Vie (pronounced vee) is French for life. I’m also French and a lot of my friends call me “V”…see the double entendre there? I would love to say I came up with it but it was actually a friend’s partner who put that seed in my head as “Spa Vie”. I didn’t want to give the illusion of something it wasn’t by using the word “spa”. I was, after all about to start working from one room in my home so it’s far from being a spa but I couldn’t get “Vie” out of my head. I really liked the idea a lot! So after toying around with it for a few days Vie Esthetic Studio was born!

I knew I wanted my logo to reflect the name and I also wanted it to be meaningful to me personally. A lot of you know that I lost my mom almost 10 years ago. She used to get so excited when she saw a hummingbird and I think of her every time I see one. Almost makes me feel like she’s popping in to say a quick “HI” before going back to her angel duties. When I looked up the meaning of hummingbirds do you know what came up?Eternal life and infinity (amongst other things of course but these gave me the chills and warm and fuzzies at once). It was at that moment that everything just seemed right and I was confident that the logo (which was designed by my amazingly talented sister in law) would represent my business the way I had envisioned.

So that’s the WHY behind my business name and logo ❤️

Between the temperature changing, the humidity decreasing and the indoor heating on blast our skin can take a beating. It’s important to take a look at what products we are using and make the necessary tweaks in order to get our skin ready for the colder weather ahead.

Book your facial appointment
It’s always a good idea to have a fall facial booked to help your skin transition from summer to fall and to get some help in choosing the proper products needed to make that transition as seamless and pleasant as possible.

Routine
In the summer months we tend to be a little more relaxed about our skincare routine. Along with back to school, fall brings “back to our normal routines” and this should definitely include our skincare!

Cleanser
In some cases people don’t need to make any changes when it comes to cleansers and different seasons but for a lot of people it’s a must. It can be as simple as switching from a foam or gel cleanser to a cleansing milk and toner combo which is something that will bring immediate comfort to the skin.

Exfoliation
If your skin tends to get irritated easily you will want to switch to gentle exfoliating product and avoid harsh scrub type products that could further irritate the skin. It’s important to exfoliate year round because you want  optimal results from your serums and creams and that won’t happen if your products are sitting on top of a layer dead skin cells.

Moisturizer
It’s time to go from a light weight moisturizer to something a bit richer to give you more hydration and protection. If you’re not already using a serum this is a great time to start! Serums offer extra moisture along with many other benefits depending on the type without feeling “icky” on the skin. For those who get really dry and your skin seems to drink everything up, the addition of a drop of two of a nutritive oil in your moisturizer could be a great option for you.

SPF
Just because you’re not spending all day at the beach, by the pool or gardening in your backyard for hours doesn’t mean you should ditch your sun care products! The sun is still very powerful through the fall and winter months so make sure to continue using your sun care.

Ask for help
Still unsure about what to do? Don’t hesitate to ask for help!  Skin is my passion and I’d love to help you get your skin ready to take on the fall! Even if you don’t have time right now to come in for a facial we can always set a little time aside for a skin analysis and consultation.

Now that summer has officially begun a lot of us will be spending more time outside enjoying it and its beautiful sunshine! There is a lot of information out there on sun health/sun safety so I thought I would compile a few important facts that we can keep in mind over the next few months. Let’s play a little game of TRUE or FALSE!

1) My makeup/day cream has an SPF in it so I’m covered all day
FALSE
Like all other sunscreen products the SPF in our makeup or day cream is effective for 2 hours only! It is very important to reapply in order to stay protected for the remainder of the day. I don’t however recommend reapplying over makeup or day cream all day as this can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, breakouts and irritation. You can either wash your face and reapply your SPF product or use a specific product that is designed to go over makeup for a fuss free application.

2) My Sunscreen is waterproof/water resistant so I don’t need to reapply after swimming
FALSE
Most sunscreens are not waterproof. Some sunscreens (but not all) are water resistant and it should be indicated on the bottle or packaging how long this is to be true. Usually it’s somewhere between 40 to 80 minutes. You must reapply after swimming or sweating regardless if your sunscreen is water resistant or not.

3) The sun is good for you
TRUE
The sun has many benefits including lowering blood pressure, improving bone health(vitamin D), improving brain function, easing mild depression, improving sleep quality and healing some skin disorders(acne, psoriasis, eczema, jaundice and fungal skin infections). It also boosts growth in children! Might explain my son’s latest growth spurt!

4) The higher the SPF the better
FALSE
Let’s compare the different levels

SPF 8 blocks 88% of rays
SPF 15 blocks 95% of rays
SPF 30 blocks 97% of rays
SPF 50 blocks 98% of rays

This is not to say that you should ditch your SPF 30 for a 15 in the middle of the summer though. Most of us require an SPF of 30 during the summer months. An SPF 50 is highly recommended for people using retinol or AHA products, for people having had microdermabraison or chemical peels and for people who have had skin cancer. An SPF 15 is great for morning sun and spring time.

5) Self tanners provide protection
FALSE
Self tanners provide zero protection from the sun. Its purpose is to give the skin a sun kissed look without any sun exposure.

6) I can enjoy the sun and tan safely
TRUE
Absolutely! We can enjoy the sun and reap its benefits as long as we’re being responsible about it!

~ wear sunscreen daily
~ reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and sooner if there has been swimming or sweating
~ don’t stay in the midday sun too long
~ wear a hat and sun glasses
~ have your after sun products handy to soothe the skin and keep it well hydrated after exposure

Enjoy the sun!

Effortless, beautiful, full lashes…sound good? To many it does and that’s enough to entice them to book their first set of eyelash extensions but many are still n the fence and rightfully so. There is sometimes a lack of information about what to expect and what to do once you leave your appointment with your gorgeous new lashes and I have even encountered clients who have been misinformed or even worse; haven’t been told anything on how to care for their extensions. So if you have been contemplating getting them but are still unsure, here is a list of facts to help guide you into making a decision that makes sense for you.

Beautiful, longer, fuller lashes with minimal effort!

When I had my extensions, my favorite part was waking up looking more awake than I felt! Extensions enhance the natural beauty of the eyes making the morning makeup routine simpler and quicker. I even have some clients that use a little gloss and that’s all they need to complete their look!

The natural lash MUST be respected!

When it comes to getting extensions a lot of clients want them as long and as thick as possible but the reality is that will depend on how long, thick and dense your natural lashes are. If this is ignored, your natural lashes will be damaged. As much as I want to grant your wish, my man concern is keeping those natural lashes happy and healthy!

You HAVE to clean your lashes!

I can’t stress this enough! Your extensions take on the role of your natural lashes keeping makeup, dust, debris, pollution and natural oils out of the eyes. If all that builds up, it can result in some pretty bad infections and/or reactions and worse. Cleansing your lashes is a must to ensure the health of your eyes. That said, you need to use a cleanser that is oil free and made for lash extensions to ensure you don’t compromise the bond of the adhesive. Some people ask if using just water is ok…it’s kind of like brushing your teeth without toothpaste. You might get what’s on the surface but bacteria and tiny particles are left behind.

What?! Why are they falling out??

It’s completely normal! Extensions are glued on to the natural lash close to the base and our lashes have a 90 day lifespan which means they are continuously falling out and grow in three cycles. They’re a lot more visible than our natural lashes so you will most definitely see them on your pillow case or in the sink from time to time.

Avoid water!

This includes humid environments such as saunas, steam showers, swimming, showering, hot tubs, intense physical activity and even gardening and doing yard work on a hot summer day. Depending on the adhesive used you will need to avoid water for 2-48 hours. Your technician can and should inform you based on the product being used.

Don’t avoid water!

I know, I know! I just said to avoid it however once the curing is complete it’s more than ok to get them wet. In fact, it’s encouraged. It helps position them upon waking and keeps them more manageable. Besides, how will you cleanse them without water?  😉

You’re the boss!

If you want extensions for a trip or special occasion and decide that’s enough until the next time, that’s fine! If you want them for daily wear for an extended period of time, that’s also fine! For continuous wear, you will have to be committed to touch ups approximately every 3 weeks. I have clients who do both…the choice is yours!

I hope this helped shed a little light n what it’s like to have extensions but don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns. I’m here and happy to help in any way I can  🙂
